Winder – motorized film transport for analogue cameras

Technology & Function

A winder is a motorized accessory for analog cameras. It advances the film automatically after each shot—instead of manually using a lever.

Winders usually operate more slowly and only operate one shutter per shot , while motor drives also allow continuous shooting at multiple frames per second. Both are used to transport film, but differ in performance and construction.

Many analog SLRs from the 1970s to 1990s have a winder or motor drive mount —e.g., Canon A-series, Minolta X-series, or Nikon FM/FE models. Compatibility depends on the mount.

Usage & Notes

A winder saves time and speeds up photography—for example, in street photography or action scenes. It also allows you to keep your eyes on the viewfinder, as the film advances automatically.
