📸 Frequently asked questions about our analogue SLR cameras
🎞️ Basics & Operation
Open the back of the camera, insert the film roll, pull the end of the film onto the take-up spool, and gently advance it until the film grips properly. Then you can close the camera and start shooting. Detailed instructions can often be found on the back or in the viewfinder window.
Many analog cameras require a small button cell battery (e.g., LR44 or PX625) – primarily for operating the light meter. Batteries are not included in our offers. Please check the exact battery size in your camera's manual or battery compartment.
Yes, photography is usually possible without batteries! However, the light meter won't work. The shutter speed and shutter release on many models are purely mechanical.
ASA or ISO indicates how light-sensitive the film is. The higher the value (e.g., ISO 400), the better the film is suited for low-light conditions. Before taking a photo, you need to set the ISO value on your camera accordingly.
When the film is full, it must be rewound manually. This is usually done using a small button on the bottom (film release) and a crank on the top of the camera. Slowly wind the crank until you feel no more resistance—then you can remove the film.
With manual cameras, you turn the lens's focus ring until the subject appears sharp in the viewfinder. Many viewfinders have a split-image aid or microprism ring that makes manual focusing easier.
The exposure time is set on the camera, and the aperture on the lens. The combination of both determines how bright or dark the image will be. Some cameras provide a recommended exposure time via the light meter; otherwise, the so-called "Sunny 16" rule or an external light meter can help you get a good idea.
Many analog cameras display an exposure indicator in the viewfinder (e.g., a pin or LED). This tells you whether the image would be over- or underexposed – depending on the set shutter speed, aperture, and ISO value. If there is no indicator, a handheld light meter or your photographic instinct can help.
🛠️ Condition & Inspection
Our analog SLR cameras are manually inspected before sale and divided into four condition categories:
- Good: Fully functional with normal signs of wear. All main functions have been tested.
- Acceptable: Technically fully functional, but with clearly visible signs of use (e.g. scratches, wear).
- Partial defect: The camera is basically functional, but the light meter does not work or displays unreliable values.
- Defect: The camera has technical defects and is only suitable as a spare parts donor or for decorative purposes.
We check these functions:
✅ Trigger mechanism
✅ Film transport
✅ Bolt barrel (auditory/visual inspection)
✅ Light meter (if available)
✅ Autofocus (if available)
We do not check these points:
❌ Frame Counter
❌ Self-timer
❌ Condition of the mirror coating or mirror mechanism in detail
Please note that each camera is unique – visual differences (serial numbers, logos, minor scratches) are possible. Functionality testing is carried out with great care, but without long-term testing or film recording.
