📷 Folding cameras – classic technology in a foldable design

🧰 Technology & Functionality

Folding cameras are analog cameras with a fold-out bellows or lens. They were primarily built in the early 20th century and combine mobility with high image quality—often in medium format.

When extended, the bellows stretches between the lens and the film back. The camera is then ready to shoot. The shutter is operated manually—often via a cable release or directly on the lens.

The foldable design allows even large medium-format cameras to be folded down to pocket size. Perfect for on-the-go use—then and now.

All folding cameras use a folding principle – with or without bellows. The bellows allow for variable lens distances (focus), while other models have a rigidly folding lens.

🎞️ Film & Compatibility

Most models use 120 roll film —a medium format film that's still available today. Some early models use formats that are no longer produced, so it's important to check the item description.

This depends on the image format:

  • 6×9 cm → 8 shots
  • 6×6 cm → 12 shots
  • 6×4.5 cm → 16 shots

Often yes—as long as it's 120 film. However, expired camera models may require special spools. You can find information about this in the respective product description.

🧠 Application & Special Features

Many folding cameras have an estimation scale (for setting the distance by feel). Some high-end models offer a rangefinder or focusing screen.

Only a few folding cameras have a built-in light meter. If not, an external light meter can help determine appropriate aperture and shutter speed values.

No—quite the opposite: The minimalist design helps you focus on the essentials. Once you've removed the bellows, you'll quickly understand the appeal of this technology.

🏷️ This is how we assess the condition

Our used folding cameras are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:

  • Good: Fully functional with minor signs of wear. Bellows sealed, shutter and shutter tested.
  • Acceptable: Functional, but with obvious signs of wear or slight play in the mechanism.
  • Partial defect: basic functions are present, but light meter is defective.
  • Defect: Not functional – suitable as decoration or spare parts dispenser.

We test these functions:

  • ✅ Trigger
  • ✅ Closure
  • ✅ Bellows for light tightness
  • ✅ Light meter (if available)

We do not check these points:

  • ❌ Image counter or self-timer

Please note: Each camera is unique. Variations in logos, serial numbers, or optical details are possible. Film test shots are not performed.
