📸 FAQ: Box cameras explained simply

🧰 Function & Application

Box cameras are simple, usually cuboid-shaped cameras with a fixed focal length and focus. They often have only a shutter button and operate without electronics—ideal for beginners or as collector's items. Exposure is achieved through a simple shutter mechanism.

For anyone who wants to discover the charm of analogue photography or take nostalgic photos. Also perfect for children or as an introduction to medium format film – many models use 120 roll film.

Despite their simplicity, they often produce astonishingly good images with a distinctive look. Many photographers appreciate the deliberate reduction to the essentials—no settings, just look and shoot.

Box cameras use simple folding or rolling shutters that allow light to pass through the film for a short time when the shutter is released. The exposure time is usually fixed, usually around 1/30 to 1/60 of a second.

Yes – loading is easy, as no automatic transport is required. The film is wound manually, usually through a viewing window on the back. Instructions are often included.

🧩 Compatibility & Technology

Most classic box cameras use 120 roll film in medium format. However, there are also models that use 620 or, more rarely, 135 film. You'll always find the appropriate film type in the product description.

Yes, many still work perfectly even after decades – if the shutter works and the film type is available, nothing stands in the way of an analogue adventure.

Most models offer no or only minimal settings—sometimes a sunny/cloudy lever (light aperture) or a bulb mode. Focus and shutter speed are usually fixed.

Both films are the same width (approximately 6 cm), but 620 film has narrower spools. Some 620 cameras can be used with 120 film—it depends on the model.

🏷️ This is how we assess the condition

Our used box cameras are manually inspected before sale and classified into the following condition categories:

  • Good: Technically fully functional with normal signs of wear. Shutter tested, body stable, viewfinder usable.
  • Acceptable: Fully functional, but with clearly visible signs of use or a very dusty/cloudy viewfinder.
  • Defect: Not functional – suitable as decoration or spare parts dispenser.

We test these functions:

  • ✅ Mechanical closure
  • ✅ StableThese functions are tested: the durability of the housing
  • ✅ Shutter function

We do not check these points:

  • ❌ Optical clarity of the viewfinder
  • ❌ Internal dust-free or cleaning

Please note: Each camera is unique. Visual variations such as logos, serial numbers, or individual signs of wear are possible. We do not conduct long-term tests with film material.
